Flour Facts

Flour is a powder made by grinding raw grains, seeds, beans, roots and nuts.

Flours are used to make a number of different food products. Cereal flour is the main ingredient of bread, which is a staple food for most cultures. Wheat flour is one of the most important ingredients around the world and is the main ingredient of breads and pastries. Corn flour and Rye flour are also used predominately in the US and Europe in a variety of food products.

Cereal flour is either a combination of the endosperm, germ, and bran mixed together to maker whole-grain flour or of the endosperm only to make refined flour.

The word flour is a variant of the word flower with both words having origins from the French word fleur or flour, which figuratively means "the finest", and a literal meaning of "blossom". Flour resulted from eliminating course and unwanted product when milling which gave rise to the phrase fleur de farine which means "the finest part of the meal".
