Research Committee

The NZFMA Research Trust is a sub-committee elected by the Management Committee of NZFMA.

This Committee has been delegated the task of administering the funds generated from levies on all flour sales in New Zealand. These levies are collected in line with the requirements of the 'Wheat Industry Research Levies Act 1989'.

The purpose of the Act is to 'provide money for research into the growing of wheat, and the manufacture of wheat into flour, bread and other products by imposing levies on persons and organisations engaged in wheat growing, flour milling, baking and other related industries.'

The function of the Research Committee is to initiate research or evaluate requests for funding made by individuals and research institutions for work related to, or deemed beneficial for, the Flour Milling Industry in New Zealand. 

Successful applications are monitored and progress reported back to the Management Committee during the life of the project. Information gained, or royalties achieved as a result of such projects is retained and distributed back to the industry.

The NZFMA Research Committee Goals and Objectives are as follows:

Goal 1 - Through industry collaboration, improve cereal grains reliability

• Developing a predictive test method to meet end user requirements.
• Investigate farm management practices to reduce variability.
• Ensure farmer viability through cultivar management and development.
• Monitor the effect of alternative grains uses impacting on sustainable supply.
• Ensure the QA grains system meets market demands.
• To work with Government and other stakeholders to be responsible for biosecurity compliance.

Goal 2 - To adapt milling processes to deliver products that are innovative and meet domestic and global requirements

• To continue to examine the milling process to identify opportunities for improving the end product.
• To further understand milled products and other ingredient interactions.
• To assess the effects of the interaction of other flours and potential benefits for other domestic and export sectors.
• Monitor the effect of alternative grains uses impacting on sustainable supply.

Goal 3 - To raise the profile and promote the cereal milling industry and its' products

• To develop and implement an integrated communication plan for Government, Potential recruitment, Consumers, Other industries, R&D providers, Website development, and Suppliers.
• To collaborate with research organisations in bids to increase the share or research funds available by adopting the recommendations of the Food and Beverage Taskforce.
• To ensure the future viability of the industry through attracting and training good staff.

Goal 4 - To develop and enhance alliances with other industry sectors

• To build alliances with other industry sectors the development of the milling industry.
