Operations based Jobs:

What you have to do:
Coordinate the day to day conditioning, screening, milling, plant cleaning and staff training requirements of the milling department.
Liaise with the laboratory to ensure that the mill is producing product within specification.
Order sifter fabric, notify appropriate person of any anticipated shortage of other materials.
Maintain first aid cabinet in staff cafeteria, order replacement stock when necessary.
Liaise with Despatch, Packaging and Wheat Intake operator to ensure that product is available for packaging and despatch by the required time.
Notify the maintenance fitter of any maintenance problems and assist in their resolution.
Coordinate staff training to ensure that adequate trained staff are available at all times to ensure the required tasks are carried out in an efficient and competent manner.
Roster production staff in conjunction with other departments.
Check mill staff time sheets, and pass on to the Production Manager.
Take stops to eliminate or minimise work place hazards, raising awareness where necessary.
Assist in other tasks as directed.
All activities are to be carried out in accordance with company policy and procedures.

  • Shift Miller
Tasks and Duties:
Set up and maintain milling and associated machinery to produce flour with the highest extraction practical whilst ensuring that end product specifications are always met.
Ensure that the wheat is conditioned and screened to required standards.
Maintain the work place and machinery in a hygienic state.
Supervise Screen Room Operatives and Mill Packers, assist where necessary.
Provide training where required to enable the Mill Packers and Screen Room Operatives to do their job in the most efficient way possible.
Make your supervisor aware of the time, training, and equipment that is needed to carry out the job properly.
To make sure the people who get your work next, whether external customers or within the company, get what they need.
Take steps to eliminate or reduce work place hazards, raising an awareness where necessary.

Skills and Knowledge:
An understanding of flour milling processes: City and Guilds Operatives Certificate.
Practical milling skills.

Basic knowledge of grain and flour characteristics and end uses.
  • Miller
A miller ensures the mill is running efficiently and with optimum extraction, and monitors and controls all milling machinery, adjusting settings where necessary. They must also ensure all products meet required specifications. This includes completing any sampling and testing required to monitor these specifications. The job requires good organisational skills, the ability to work unsupervised, and at least four years experience in the milling industry.
  • Assistant Miller
The assistant miller ensures the correct wheats are being used and the correct bins are being emptied and filled, and that wheat is damped and conditioned correctly. They carry out mill tests every two hours and ensure all wheat cleaning machinery is working efficiently and is correctly adjusted to remove impurities. They are also responsible for maintaining hygiene and cleanliness standards. The job requires the ability to solve problems and work unsupervised, and good communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Trainee Miller
Trainee millers learn the operating procedures of the following areas: flour mill, wheat cleaning section, wheat intake and transfer to mill and the laboratory. After a suitable training period the trainee miller can run the mill and wheat silos. The job requires good secondary school qualifications in English, mathematics and science.

What you do:
Operate conditioning machinery and screenroom to prepare wheat for milling.
Relieve Mill Packers for meal breaks.
Maintain the work place and machinery in a hygienic state.
Assist the Shift Miller in the operation of the mill.

Shut down plant under your responsibility to repair problems requiring immediate attention.

Skills required for your job:
Basic reading, writing and maths skills.
Physically fit.
Knowledge of screenroom and conditioning.
Basic understanding of mill processes.
Ability to organise own work tasks and follow instructions.
Ability to carry out protein and moisture laboratory tests.
  • Laboratory Technician/Assistant
Laboratory assistants carry out daily testing of mill flour samples. This includes: farinograph, extensograph, amylograph, NIR moisture, NIR protein, falling number and colour grade tests. They test forward, incoming and mill grist samples. This includes: screenings, kernel weight, test weight, falling number, NIR moisture and NIR protein tests. Other parts of the job include additional testing such as: Kjeldahl protein tests, air oven moisture tests, ash test, maltose test, germ index test and particle size testing; preparation of chemicals used in testing; and basic maintenance of laboratory equipment. The job requires good communication skills both written and oral, understanding of technical procedures, and the ability to solve problems and work unsupervised.

Formal laboratory qualifications are helpful.

    It is not unusual to have a qualified baker working for a flour milling company. They are called upon to deliver technical support to customers and in new product development work, as well as testing production run flour to ensure quality and performance is within specifications
  • Engineering Technician
The engineering technician installs, maintains and improves plant electrical and instrumentation systems.
  • Finished Goods Supervisor
The finished goods supervisor ensures that production requirements for all products are being met and that cleanliness and fumigation procedures are being carried out. They control inwards and outwards goods, and are responsible for blending stock to meet production requirements.

The laboratory manager/quality co-ordinator manages the day-to-day running of the laboratory which requires knowledge of testing techniques, testing procedures and interpretation of laboratory results. Other responsibilities include: ensuring that all products meet the required specifications; formulating new products; maintaining laboratory computer systems; monitoring all mill measuring equipment; and evaluating raw materials as required.

The job requires good communication skills, sound technical knowledge, computer skills, ability to organise and supervise staff, laboratory experience, and knowledge of quality systems

Packing shift leader
The packing shift leader ensures the production requirements of all products are being met and that all documented procedures are being followed. They ensure the metal detector is checked at the beginning of the shift and that scales are check weighed.

Packer
Packers ensure correct products are being packed into correct sized bags at correct weights. They test products as required and keep records of products packed.

  • Wheat Intake Operator
The wheat intake operator organises the intake of wheat containers and ensures all wheat taken into the silo is sound and in good condition and is accompanied by the correct information. They also sample and test all incoming grain, transfer wheat to the mill in line with production requirements, and ensure the required level of cleanliness is maintained and that silos are cleaned, turned and fumigated regularly.

The general manager of the company ensures profitability and return on capital, and develops and recommends business strategies. Their other responsibilities include: ensuring the company complies with all statutory requirements; providing leadership to employees; negotiating major sales contracts; developing new business opportunities; considering opportunities to introduce new products and technologies; ensuring that safety management is actively practiced; and that staff training and employment contracts are well managed.

A customer service officer maintains telephone contact with customers to ensure orders are filled accurately and at the agreed delivery time. They maintain the customer database and help meet sales targets.

  • Technical Representative
The technical representative provides technical support to existing customers, and develops and implements promotional activities in collaboration with the Sales Manager. The preferred qualification is a qualified baker and pastry cook.
